Maybe It's all the X-Files I have been watching, but 1990s scifi and science oriented thrillers have a fascinating culmatiive quality now, going back to the anti-mcarthyism of the 50s, the psychedelic opening up of mental possibilty/don't trust the government aspects of the 1960s, the rapid advancements in computer technology in the 70s, and the fear of technology that sprung from the 1980s. After Sept 11, the country went in a entirely different direction, at least in the popular consciousness, concerning where to place our worries.
It's easy to watch these two movies now and laugh at the dated ideas/tech, but viewed through a historical lens, there fascinating curios of what we were paranoid about our present qnd future. And they were not completely wrong either..
Sandra Bullock is excellent in both roles, she remains an underrated Actor.
